CEELA: Participation in municipal elections was within Latin American standards

The statement was made by Eugenio Chicas, former president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of El Salvador and who heads the mission of the Council of Electoral Experts of Latin America (CEELA) that accompanied the recent municipal electoral process held in the country.

As part of the conclusions presented by the mission of international chaperones, CEELA considered as “important and significant” the participation of voters, accounted for by the National Electoral Council (CNE) in 27.42%, with 92.30% of the minutes transmitted.

“In sectional or municipal election vote far fewer people than in congressional or presidential elections. We, the Americas continue to be, in this sense, very prone to presidentialism, and one where we need a higher level of education in terms of the relevance of the role of municipal councils”.

By virtue of this, CEELA recommended to the national electoral entity to make a “greater effort in the civic campaign highlighting the relevance of the municipal councils”.

At a press conference, from the CNE headquarters in Caracas, Chicas praised the performance of the election day and the level of organization, highlighting that the process was carried out with total transparency.

“An election that has filled the logistical, organizational and procedural standards of the elections for which international standards are established and Venezuela has a process and an electoral mechanism that conforms to those standards”, he said.
