On Monday, at the headquarters of the United Nations in Vienna, was held the transfer of the Presidency of the Non-Aligned Countries Movement (NAM) to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, within the framework of the 17th Summit of the multilateral organization held in Margarita lsland from September 13 to 18, 2016.
During the event, organized by the Permanent Mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the permanent representative to the International Organizations, Jesse Chacón Escamillo, thanked in his words to Iran for the work made in the last four years chairing the Non-Aligned Countries Movement (NAM), reaffirming the commitment of the Bolivarian Government to continue advancing the founding principles, and especially advocating for peace and global justice.
Also, Chacón emphasized that as noted by President Nicolas Maduro at the plenary meeting on Saturday, September 17 in Margarita Island: “This command will be used with firmness and loyalty to the welfare of the causes of the peoples”, for the purpose of strengthening and promoting relations among its members in order to move forward based on its founding principles towards a world of peace, free of nuclear weapons.
Moreover, he recalled that the world is faced with a real threat of division among civilizations, generated by the empires with their ideological approaches to international problems, who are being played on by extremists and fascists. Therefore, he called on member countries of NAM, to further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and meet the challenges currently presented, for the sake of preserving peace and global security.
Regarding nuclear safety, he said that since the founding of the NAM, its leaders reiterated their deep concern about the threat posed to humanity by the continued existence of nuclear weapons and their possible use or threat of use, and reaffirmed that the nuclear disarmament would be the highest priority in the field of disarmament.
In this context, he said that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela insists on the need to undertake effective action through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which lead to a process of general and complete disarmament under strict international verification; advocating in particular for the achievement of nuclear disarmament for maintaining the peace and international security.
Finally, he remembered Commander Hugo Chavez, who during the 14th NAM Summit held in Cuba in 2006, said; “… It is possible, now indeed, that after these past centuries, we can achieve a world where reigns not a country, nor a world’s police, nor war, nor the guns and bayonets; but where prevails the deepest feeling of fraternity, brotherhood and (…) love between us. That world is possible, this other world is not possible. “
