Venezuela condemns and rejects colonialist threat against Venezuelan airspace

In an official communiqué, the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly denounced a new colonialist aggression by the United States against the sovereignty of its national airspace.

The official document, issued on November 29, qualified as «extravagant, illegal, and unjustified» the statements made by President Donald Trump, who, through social media, attempted to apply extraterritorial jurisdiction over Venezuelan airspace. It is worth noting that the government statement emphasizes that these actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law.

In the official text, the National Executive categorically rejected what it called «colonialist threats» against the territorial integrity and aeronautical security of Venezuela. Furthermore, the statement underscores the unprecedented nature of a foreign leader attempting to issue orders over Venezuelan sovereign airspace.

The official document specifies that this attitude represents a new act of aggression in a series of interventionist actions that violate the full sovereignty of the Venezuelan State. Consequently, the statement reaffirms Venezuela’s inalienable right to exclusive control of its airspace as an integral part of its territory.

Through this communiqué, Venezuelan authorities reiterated their unwavering commitment to defending territorial integrity against the claims of the US administration. Finally, the official document concludes by reaffirming before the international community Venezuela’s firm stance against any form of external interference.

In summary, the official communiqué constitutes a forceful diplomatic response that upholds the right to self-determination as a fundamental principle of international relations, rejecting any action that affects national sovereignty.

Following, the full text of the Communiqué:

Venezuela denounces and condemns the colonialist threat that seeks to affect the sovereignty of its airspace, this constituting a new extravagant, legal, and unjustified aggression against the people of Venezuela.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly repudiates the public message disseminated today on social media by the President of the United States, in which he attempts to extraterritorially apply the illegitimate jurisdiction of the United States in Venezuela by unprecedentedly trying to give orders and threaten the sovereignty of the national airspace, territorial integrity, aeronautical security, and the full sovereignty of the Venezuelan State.

This type of declaration constitutes a hostile, unilateral, and arbitrary act, incompatible with the most fundamental principles of International Law and part of a permanent policy of aggression against our country, with colonial pretensions over our region of Latin America and the Caribbean, denying International Law. Venezuela denounces before the world that such statements represent an explicit threat of the use of force, clearly and unequivocally prohibited by Article 2, paragraph 4, of the Charter of the United Nations.

Likewise, this attempt at intimidation violates Article 1 of the Charter, which establishes as its fundamental purpose the maintenance of international peace and security.

Venezuela demands unrestricted respect for its airspace, protected under the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and reaffirmed in the 1944 Chicago Convention, whose Article 1 categorically recognizes that «each State has exclusive and absolute sovereignty over the airspace above its territorial sea.»

The Bolivarian Government warns that Venezuela will not accept orders, threats, or interference from any foreign power. No authority outside of Venezuelan institutions has the power to interfere with, block, or condition the use of national airspace.

Through this action, the United States government has unilaterally suspended the Venezuelan migrant flights that were being carried out regularly and weekly as part of the repatriation of Venezuelans through the Plan Vuelta a la Patria (Return to the Homeland Plan). Until now, there have been carried out 75 flights to repatriate 13,956 Venezuelan migrant men and women, who have been received with love and absolute solidarity.

We make a direct appeal to the international community, the sovereign governments of the world, the UN, and the corresponding multilateral organizations to firmly reject this immoral act of aggression, which amounts to a threat against the sovereignty and security of our Homeland, the Caribbean, and northern South America. Venezuela will respond with dignity, with legality, and all the strength granted by international law and the anti-imperialist spirit of our people.

Venezuela will continue fully exercising its sovereignty, protected by international law, throughout its airspace. This threat against Venezuela is a threat against continental peace, and our peoples, heirs of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, shall prevail.”
