The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, described as a crude and gross interventionist policy the covert operations by the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) against Venezuela. Speaking at the National Congress of Men and Women Cooks of the Homeland, the head of state warned about this threat to national peace:
«They authorized the CIA to carry out operations against Venezuela, against the peace of Venezuela; according to them, it has never been seen before, but they’ve always done it”, denounced the president. He noted that the CIA itself has declassified documents proving its historical involvement in coups d’état in various countries.
The president recalled emblematic cases of intervention by the CIA in Latin America and other regions, mentioning the coups against Jacobo Árbenz in Guatemala (1954), Juan Bosch in the Dominican Republic (1965), João Goulart in Brazil (1964), and Salvador Allende in Chile (1973). He described it as immoral for them to apologize for these actions while maintaining their interventionist policy.
He linked these operations to a strategy of psychological warfare against Venezuela, and revealed a significant precedent: the humanitarian exchange last July, where 252 Venezuelans kidnapped in El Salvador were rescued, and were handed over 10 terrorists linked to the CIA. «Can anyone believe that the CIA hasn’t been operating in Venezuela for 60 years?» he questioned.
In the face of interventionist narratives, President Maduro was blunt: «We tell you that the people of Venezuela do not want to be slaves or colonies ever again, ever. These people have decided to be free, independent, and sovereign.» He emphatically rejected any colonial pretensions over the country.
Finally, he asserted that the Venezuelan people are alert to these attacks, which are motivated by interests over natural resources: «We are going to win the peace that the Venezuelan people deserve,» concluded the dignitary, expressing confidence in the nation’s capacity for resistance in the face of this international conspiracy.
