Head of State requests support from Pope Leo XIV to consolidate peace in Venezuela

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, sent a letter to Pope Leo XIV requesting the support of the Holy See to consolidate peace and national dialogue. The letter seeks the Vatican’s support in efforts to achieve stability in the country.

Chancellor Yván Gil confirmed the information and detailed the delivery procedure. The letter was delivered by the Venezuelan ambassador to the Holy See, Franklin Zeltzer, during a meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State.

This meeting also served to coordinate events related to a historic canonization. Progress was made in preparations for the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles, scheduled for October 19 in St. Peter’s Basilica.

During the meeting was formally delivered President Maduro’s official letter to the Supreme Pontiff. In it, the national government reiterates its willingness to promote understanding and reconciliation.

Chancellor Gil stated that the central objective of the letter is to request special support to consolidate peace in Venezuela: «This meeting was opportune to deliver a letter from President Nicolás Maduro Moros, addressed to Pope Leo XIV, in which he requests special support to consolidate peace in Venezuela,» he noted.

The event reaffirms the ties of cooperation between Venezuela and the Holy See. It occurs on the eve of a milestone for the Venezuelan Catholic faith: the proclamation of its first two saints officially recognized by the Church.
