The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela submitted a formal communication to the United Nations (UN) Security Council denouncing the illegal incursion of US fighter jets detected on October 2. The documentation was delivered to Russian Ambassador Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya, who holds the rotating presidency of the UN’s highest security body.
Chancellor Yván Gil reported through his social media that the delivery of the communication was made by the Venezuelan Alternate Ambassador to the United Nations, Joaquín Pérez. The diplomatic action seeks to alert the international community to this violation of national sovereignty.
The Chancellor stated that this act not only represents a threat to national sovereignty, «but also contravenes the norms of international law and the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.» The Venezuelan Chancellor emphasized the illegal nature of the air incursion within the international legal framework.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that «this serious situation is compounded by the growing militarization of the Caribbean, which constitutes clear harassment of Venezuela.» The statement by the Chancellor reflects the Venezuelan government’s concern over the increase in military activities in the Caribbean region.
The aerial maneuver was identified by the Command for Integral Aerospace Defense (CODAI), the agency responsible for the surveillance and protection of Venezuelan airspace. The incursion occurred approximately 75 kilometers off the Venezuelan coast, within areas under national jurisdiction.
The communication submitted to the UN Security Council bases its denunciation on the flagrant violation of the norms of international law, particularly the principles established in the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation. This legal instrument regulates air traffic between nations and establishes the rights of states over their airspace.
The complaint is framed within a regional context characterized by the increase in military presence in the Caribbean, which affects the stability and peace of the region. The communication to the UN seeks to raise international awareness about the risks of these activities to regional security.
The diplomatic efforts of President Nicolás Maduro’s government reflect its commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes through the multilateral mechanisms established in the United Nations Charter. This action is aligned with the foreign policy of promoting peace and respect for international law.
