An ample fundamental segment of the country joined this Tuesday the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, for the formal installation of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace. The event brought together national authorities, representatives, leaders of 53 political parties, governors, senior military commanders, business representatives, opposition figures, workers, academics, and cultural figures.
The President of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, was responsible for summarizing the purpose of the meeting, stating that «this is the time for unity, for meeting, for shaking hands.» He called for transcending partisan and religious differences to unite as Venezuelans in defense of a common goal: Peace.
Rodríguez emphasized that this unity is vital in order to confront imperialist threats. He emphasized that the decision to advance with this council is made in defense of the nation’s sovereignty, independence, and peace, inspired by the legacy of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.
The parliamentarian recalled the armed invasion of Venezuela in 1902, a historic event where the people united against foreign interests. He emphasized that, in the face of current threats from the US government, the Venezuelan people have come out to defend the sovereignty and integrity of the national territory.
This initiative arose as a result of an initial meeting held on August 22 at the Federal Legislative Palace. At that initial meeting, various national sectors reached a consensus to advance the defense of the homeland, its integrity, and its truth, laying the foundation for the newly established council.
The National Council for Sovereignty and Peace was solemnly established with the goal of being an organic space for meeting and defense. The ample turnout and the presence of President Maduro, his cabinet, and the military high command reflect the national priority given to this initiative.
