The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, formally alerted the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, about the hostile actions and violations of peace treaties by the United States government. The denounce was made in an official letter sent to the highest international body.
In the document, the Venezuelan president detailed that US actions include the deployment of nuclear assets in the region. President Maduro stated that this measure represents a serious threat that directly endangers the peace and security not only of Venezuela, but of the entire region.
The communication emphasizes that Venezuela has faced a systematic policy of harassment for years. This would include the application of unilateral coercive measures, smear campaigns, and the use of lawfare to criminalize its institutions and legitimate leaders, according to Venezuela’s position.
The president noted that these actions contravene key international treaties. Specifically, the violation of the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which establishes the denuclearization of Latin America and the Caribbean, and whose obligations also fall on the United States through its protocols.
Likewise, he indicated that these measures disregard the 2014 CELAC Proclamation, which declared the region as a Zone of Peace. The letter emphasizes that the resurgence of policies of force that endanger international stability and security cannot be allowed.
Finally, President Maduro reaffirmed Venezuela’s commitment to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He called on the UN, within its powers, to actively defend its fundamental values and urge the United States to cease these actions and respect the sovereignty of its peoples.
