Venezuela rejects US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement against President Díaz-Canel

Venezuela rejected this Friday in a «strongly and categorical» manner the decision of the United States government, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to sanction Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Through a communiqué issued by the Chancellory, the statement denounced «the infamous statement» by the senior US official, «who, in a new display of hatred, unhealthy obsession, and imperial arrogance, seeks to sanction the legitimate president of the Republic of Cuba.»

It also noted that this affront to international law adds to the «deep contempt for the free peoples» of the region:

It is an intolerable affront to international law that an official of the US government assumes the power to sanction the head of state of a sovereign country. The attempt to punish President Díaz-Canel is not only a violation of the fundamental principles of coexistence among nations, but also an expression of profound contempt for the free peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean,” as asserted the official text.

The note by the Chancellery also referred to the US Secretary of State as a “spokesperson for resentment and failure,” who “blinded by hatred, self-conscious of Cuba’s invincible dignity, has built his political career on the desire to destroy revolutions that he neither understands nor will ever be able to subdue.”

Likewise, it asserted that all imperialist attempts against our Americas can only fail.

It emphasized that “the imposition of new coercive measures is nothing more than acts of financial piracy disguised as false morality.”

The Venezuelan government stated that «While the Cuban people resists with heroic dignity, the United States government is directly responsible for the suffering caused by the criminal and illegal blockade, cowardly intensified by figures such as Rubio.»

Finally, Venezuela reiterated its support for the people, the government of the Republic of Cuba, and its president, and denounced «the policy of systematic aggression promoted by the current US Secretary of State, whose only agenda is to prolong the Monroe Doctrine under new masks.»
