From Moscow, the capital of Russia, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, held a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart, Kasim-Yomart Tokaev, with the aim of strengthening the ties of cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
Relations between Venezuela and Kazakhstan have evolved significantly over several decades in strategic areas such as energy, international politics, and multilateral agreements. In 2019, both nations strengthened diplomatic cooperation in Astana, the capital of the aforementioned country.
In both countries’ economic strategies, the energy issue is notable because both nations share energy interests, and Venezuela has sought to expand cooperation with the state-owned company KazMunayGas. Kazakhstan holds 50% of the Caspian Sea’s oil and gas reserves and has been a key player in forums such as OPEC Plus and the Gas Exporting Countries.
In 2015, Kazakhstan joined the Inter-American Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters, a mechanism that includes the Bolivarian nation, marking a first step in legal cooperation between the two nations.
