During his virtual address at the 9th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), President Nicolás Maduro denounced the trade war imposed by the United States as having devastating consequences for globalization and international trade agreements.
President Maduro explained that while countries in the global south, such as Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua, have historically been victims of unilateral sanctions and coercive measures, the current economic and tariff trade war waged by the United States against 180 countries around the world has marked a turning point:
«Today the aggression is against the entire world. The economic and tariff trade war against 180 countries around the world has unleashed what can be described today as the end of Western globalization,» stated the Venezuelan president.
The president emphasized that the trade war has mortally wounded international trade and economic law, as well as bilateral and multilateral trade agreements: «Commercial, economic, international, and public law has been mortally wounded,» emphasized Maduro. He also highlighted that the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been «buried» by the effects of this economic war.
The head of state also warned about the United States’ attempt to impose a hegemonic economic and trade model that seeks to end the emerging multipolar world: «They want to impose, against the grain, a hegemonic economic and trade model that simply puts an end to the multipolar world that has emerged in recent decades with the economic development of new powers, new countries, and new regions,» he concluded.
