The constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, put into service the Building for Venezuelan Environmental Sciences at the Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC), which houses three Centers for Scientific Studies and Research that until now did not have their own «niche»: The center for the global environmental crisis, the center for atmospheric sciences and biogeochemistry, and the center for oceanology and Antarctic studies.
«Venezuela at the forefront of the production of scientific knowledge for life, for peace in the world and especially in Latin America,» said the head of state from the Caricuao zoological park (Caracas), where he led the activation of transformation number six (6th T) on ecosocialism, science and technology.
Through a satellite pass was made a connection with the Vice Minister for Knowledge and Director of IVIC, biologist Alberto Quintero. Together with three researchers from the Institute, Elga Elena Hann, Natalia Muñoz Cordero and Dinora Sánchez, he presented the facilities of the new Environmental Sciences Building and its three work areas.
The first Center, on studies of the global environmental crisis, was created with the purpose of generating scientific and technological information, integrating it, and making it available to support the design of public policies. It is made up of three laboratories: spatial modeling, biological diversity, and the ecosystems and global change laboratory.
The atmospheric sciences and biogeochemistry center has two laboratories that collect information on the activity related to the atmosphere, the quality of air in particles and atmospheric gases, as well as the biogeochemistry of nitrogen and carbon, associated with soil and bodies of water. The objective is to provide scientific knowledge that supports decisions on socio-environmental matters.
The Oceanology and Antarctica Center is a multidisciplinary center dedicated to studying everything that is the ocean, the marine, coastal and island parts of Venezuela as well as Antarctica: “In which we have the commitment to promote advisory members, soon, and we put that purpose and objective well proposed,” explained the authorities. This third center has six laboratories, which address six lines of “flagship research.” It has marine chemical techniques, assessment and use of marine resources, phytoplankton, sea level studies and ocean data and modeling, research on the well-known red tides and microplastics.
“With this we make the commitment of all the centers that live in this Environmental Sciences Building, with this new strategic line of the country, where we want to preserve the environment, take care of our natural resources and raise awareness,” concluded the researchers.
