Venezuela will not accept mediation from the International Court of Justice in the controversy

Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez affirmed that it is very serious that Guyana says that it is not going to negotiate over the Essequibo territory and continues on the path of the unilateral demand that it introduced in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Rodríguez, interviewed on Telesur this Wednesday, on the topic of the strategy and reasons of defense of the Guayana Esequiba, attacked Guyana’s position which, in her opinion, is none other than favoring oil transnationals and the United States.

Likewise, she stressed that Guyana wants to lead a confrontation and seek the exploitation of these natural resources in a sea that has not been delimited.

If there were so much certainty about the Arbitration Award to which Guyana resorts, the Geneva Agreement of 1966 would not exist, by which both states are obliged to negotiate,” Rodríguez highlighted.

Venezuela does not acknowledge the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice to settle disagreements,” said Rodríguez, recalling that “the only way for it to be recognized (the jurisdiction by the ICJ) is for Venezuela to express its willingness to assist. Both parties must agree. When a good officiant was appointed, both parties had to express their agreement,” she recalled.

This way she made clear that Venezuela will not accept mediation by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the controversy.

Guyana has not improved:

She criticized that, despite maintaining oil exploitation since 2019, Guyana has not improved its social indicators: “The social impact has been 0, they are the same indicators as in 2015…” she lamented.

At the same time, she assured that Guyana is not working for the people of the Caribbean: “I would like to see who has designed a program such as Petrocaribe, that benefits the people of our region. Guyana is victimized but the resources it produces are for transnationals.”

In her opinion, the Guyanese authorities “take for granted that there will be an ICJ ruling in their favor, therefore, they prejudge, they violate international maritime law, they are giving up the sea and they go much further.”
