With raising of the National Flag began commemoration of the Day of Indigenous Resistance

This Monday, October 12 are commemorated 528 years of the Indigenous Resistance, the fight against the oppressive colonialist hegemony responsible for the greatest genocide of humanity.

On this date, authorities of the Venezuelan Government, members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) and the people, began the commemorative events with the raising of the National Flag on the main pole of the Foro Libertador Monumental Complex.

The activity was headed by the Sectoral Vice President for Social and Territorial Development, Aristóbulo Istúriz; the Minister for Indigenous Peoples, Yamilet Mirabal, among other personalities.

During the formal ceremony, honors were paid to the Originary Native Peoples from the National Pantheon, and Venezuela reiterated that will stand in defense of its truth, with sovereignty and ancestral identity.

Since October 10, 2002, by Presidential Decree number 2,028, October 12 is commemorated in Venezuela as the Day of Indigenous Resistance, in recognition of the constancy, struggle for their dignity, cultural and human diversity of the original peoples of America.

Previously, the date was celebrated as Day of the Race –as in many other countries in the region–, but after more than 500 years of struggle, Commander Hugo Chávez issued the presidential decree to vindicate the struggles of indigenous peoples against the European invasion, led by Christopher Columbus, characterized by massacres, looting and transculturation.
