Venezuela responded to the announcement by the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, who on Thursday “definitively” broke relations with the South American country.
The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, predicted on his Twitter account that the new Giammattei government will become “another bad taste joke”.
“The Italian citizen who presides over the sisterly Republic of Guatemala has thrown himself at the feet of Donald Trump [US president] immediately”, tweeted Arreaza, who despite his harsh signaling against the president, reiterated the “respect and Affection” of Venezuela “to the dignified Guatemalan people”.
The Venezuelan Chancellory stated so after this Thursday Giammattei reported that his government would break relations with Venezuela, a decision he had announced since he was a candidate for the Presidency:
“We have issued orders to Foreign Minister [Pedro Brolo] so that the only person who remains in the Venezuelan Embassy will proceed to return, and we will definitely close relations with the Government of Venezuela”, said Giammattei, according to information from the Guatemalan News Agency.
In October 2019, the Government of Venezuela denied entry to the territory of the country to Giammattei because he had entered with an Italian passport and without authorization from the Executive branch. The then elected president of Guatemala reported that he planned to meet with self-proclaimed deputy Juan Guaidó.
“Once ruled out by Mr. Giammattei himself that the reason for his trip was that of a visit of a tourist or private nature, and since there is no proof of invitation by the National Executive, nor any coordination on the part of the Guatemalan Embassy in relation to this visit, was proceeded to declare his inadmissibility”, explained the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry in a press release.
