Argentinean government withdraws credentials to “ambassador” appointed by Guaido

The Government of Argentina on Tuesday withdrew diplomatic credentials from Venezuelan lawyer Elisa Trotta Gamus, who had been appointed as “ambassador” last year by the opposition deputy, Juan Guaidó.

Trotta Gamus had been recognized with that position by the Argentine Foreign Ministry in October last year, when Mauricio Macri still ruled. Now, under the administration of Alberto Fernández, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a note that puts “an end to its special mission in the Argentinean Republic, and to its duties”.

Since her appointment, the Venezuelan lawyer had set up a kind of Consulate that worked in parallel to the Embassy under the control of the Government of the Constitutional President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro.

In an interview published Tuesday by an Argentine media, hours before the Foreign Ministry’s decision was known, Trotta said she hoped to “build a relationship with the new government, start a dialogue and work for democracy and the recovery of freedom in Venezuela”.

However, the decision made by the Casa Rosada could be foreseen since last December, a few days after Alberto Fernández taking power, his foreign minister Felipe Solá had considered the diplomatic representation of Trotta Gamus as illegal: “We are not going to look for excuses. We think that relations are complex, but you can’t violate the legislation to have the ambassador you want”, said Solá in statements to an Argentine media.
