April 11 marks the anniversary of the coup d’état perpetrated against then president of the Republic, Hugo Chávez. Seventeen years later the fight remains the same, for the independence and defense of the Homeland, as said on Monday the Minister for Penitentiary Services, Iris Varela.
«This is the people that followed Bolívar, who was betrayed by the expulsion of the Liberator from our country, who was betrayed during the establishment of the Republic, who was betrayed on January 23, 1958 and who has been betrayed. It is the same people, it is the same struggle, an ancestral struggle for independence», she agreed.
Varela, who in 2002 served as a deputy of the Republic, recalled the level of revolutionary consciousness of the Venezuelan people who moved, spontaneously, to Miraflores Palace and the military bases, to demand the restitution of its constitutional President.
«I am proud to be Venezuelan and to have the historic opportunity to be leading the entire struggle for the homeland and sovereignty,» she said in conversation with William Castillo during the Bolivarian Diplomacy program, broadcast by RNV Informative channel.
The people who took to the streets in 2002 to say «Even hungry and unemployed, with Chavez I will fight» is the same one that says now «It is not because of the CLAP (subsidized food aid by the Local Production and Supply Committees), it is not because of the bonds, it is for Peace that I defend Nicolás».
