Full Communiqué:
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela considers it appropriate to inform the public in relation to its sovereign decision to break relations with the Government of the United States of America, announced by the Constitutional President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro Moros, on January 23.
In this regard, it is reported that yesterday, January 25, the effective withdrawal of the staff of the US diplomatic mission in Caracas was carried out within the term granted. In the same way, the staff of the Venezuelan diplomatic mission in Washington has started the return to Caracas today.
Next, both governments have agreed to hold negotiations for the establishment of an Interests Office in each capital, from which migratory procedures and other issues of bilateral interest can be attended, with strict adherence to international law for cases of breakdown of relations between countries. To do this, a period of thirty days has been established to reach this agreement.
With a view to this objective, the remaining staff of each mission has been authorized, who during the agreed period will continue to be protected by diplomatic prerogatives, having to concentrate their activities exclusively in the headquarters that corresponded to the former Embassies, before the rupture of relations.
If the agreement is not reached within the peremptory period of thirty days, both missions will cease activities and both States will proceed to designate the entity that each one will choose to entrust their respective interests, the remaining personnel must leave the territory of each country within the following seventy-two hours after the expiration of said period.
The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela remains firm in its purpose of defending the independence, sovereignty and peace of the Republic, rejecting any act of foreign interference and demanding, with aplomb and serenity, that the relationship with the other countries of the world is always done in terms of respect and equality”.
