Ernesto Samper, secretary general of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur); along with the former Presidents of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero; of Panmá, Martin Torrijos; and the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, pointed out as positive the willingness of President Nicolas Maduro to resume the dialogue between the Government and opposition in Venezuela.
In an official statement, Unasur reaffirms its willingness to support the country in establishing a national dialogue, to seek the peace and tranquility of all citizens.
“Considering the ratification of the desire for reconciliation expressed by the Government and the opposition represented in the Board of Democratic Unity, the former Presidents reiterate their firm commitment to the task at hand and make a call to continue on the path which will reaffirm peace and coexistence: the Dialogue. Likewise, they welcome the strong support of the international and hemispheric community to this effort”, reads the text published on the website of the agency.
The statement refers to recent statements issued by the National Executive after the self-called Democratic Unity Board (MUD) exposed their conditions to join the dialogue process.
A dialogue without conditions:
At a press conference, Jorge Rodriguez, head of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), made the reading of a statement in response to the conditions that the MUD presented as a requirement to join the dialogue process.
Representatives of the ruling party demanded, to participate in the dialogue, that the “dialogue should elapse without any conditions of any kind and in the spirit of preserving the peace of the nation, respect for institutions and the democratic powers established in the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela “.
They also asked the Venezuelan right wing to stop “their rhetoric of intolerance, hatred and violence, their foray into agendas of unconventional warfare against the economy and peace in the country, and to terminate their calls for an intervention and interference of imperial factors and of the International Right wing”.
They also reiterated their “disposal to immediately resume the work agenda that was previously agreed on in the exploratory meetings held with the accompaniment” of Unasur, and for this agenda to be completed as soon as possible in order to contribute to the climate of peace and tranquility in Venezuela.
