The National Assembly (AN) unanimously declared the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as persona non grata. This decision was made during the ordinary session held on Tuesday, October 28, in response to the official’s statements supporting a military aggression by the US against Venezuela.
The President of Parliament, Deputy Jorge Rodríguez, justified the measure as a «matter of honor, dignity, morality, and respect» for the Venezuelan people. Likewise, the AN supported the suspension of energy agreements with Trinidad and Tobago previously ordered by President Nicolás Maduro.
Deputy María Iris Varela, a member of the Permanent Committee on Foreign Policy, qualified the stance by Trinidad and Tobago as warmongering against Latin America and the Caribbean. During her address, she questioned the threats against Venezuelan sovereignty and the attempts to violate the right to self-determination.
The declaration is based on principles of the Charter of the United Nations that protect the territorial integrity and political independence of States. The parliamentary measure represents an institutional response to what is considered a threat to national sovereignty and regional peace.
