Venezuela works with ICC to address situation on human rights

The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, reported this Thursday that Venezuela is working with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to address the country’s situation regarding Human Rights.

Through a series of messages published on his account on the Twitter social network, Saab explained that Venezuela is proceeding in a constructive collaboration with the ICC Prosecutor’s Office, with the contribution of information on the “performance of the Venezuelan justice and exclusively complementary powers.” of that organism.

He specified that this collaboration is due to the fact that the ICC is in the preliminary phase of a report, which will determine whether there have been cases in Venezuela that fall within its competence and the sanctions surrounding them.

For this reason, Saab stated that Venezuela reaffirms its sovereign power to punish, based on what is established in the Constitution of the Republic, crimes against human rights and whose actions will be reflected in the report that they will present before said instance.

Also, he indicated that these joint activities between both prosecutors were agreed during his visit together with the ombudsman, Alfredo Ruíz, to the headquarters of the International Criminal Court, located in the city of The Hague, the Netherlands.

He explained that from that space, both officials provided details of the progress of the Venezuelan justice system to punish human rights violations, before the Attorney General of the ICC, Fatou Bensouda.

“In our presentation we point out the commitment of the Venezuelan State and its institutions to investigate, prosecute, accuse and convict, -as has been done by the Public Ministry and the competent Courts, those responsible for these Human Rights violations,” he stressed.

In addition, he notified through his Twitter account that the progress on the complaint filed by Venezuela on the unilateral coercive measures applied by the United States government against the Venezuelan State was shared between both prosecutors, on February 13 in The Hague.
