IVIC works on sequencing of the complete Covid-19 genome circulating in Venezuela

The Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) is managing to sequence the complete genome of the virus that is circulating in Venezuela, in order to offer therapeutic treatment solutions to patients, in addition to collaborating in the manufacture of artificial respirators in a joint public and private project for the protection of the Venezuelan people.

“We are currently sequencing the entire Covid 19 genome with state-of-the-art technology to find out what type of virus is circulating in the country and which has repercussions on the therapeutic issue of treatment and disease control”, as reported Eloy Sira., director of this scientific agency of the State, during a telephone interview to the “Punto de Encuentro” (Meeting Point) program, broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión.

He commented that in the countries of the world that suffer from the pandemic they are working in specialized laboratories, doing this work that is routine in cases like this and that have these scientific capabilities.

“We have these capabilities, we have scientific infrastructure in equipment and personnel to carry out these investigations and determine the type of virus that is circulating in Venezuela”, said Eloy Sira.

He affirmed that Venezuela has been able to contain the contagion, with a low curve of positive cases, and has achieved a very high number of recoveries: “But you shouldn’t claim victory, as President Maduro said, you have to keep working without letting your guard down.”
