The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed his full support for the initiative of the Government of the Dominican Republic, supported by the former President of the Government of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, to invite the Government of Venezuela and the opposition to participate in a process of political negotiation.

Through a communiqué, the international organization welcomed that initiatives such as these are developed “So to demonstrate the commitment of the Venezuelan politicians to address the challenges of the country through mediation”.

Guterres reiterated his firm conviction that the situation in Venezuela requires a political solution based on dialogue and the commitment between the Government and the opposition to ensure the peaceful coexistence of all Venezuelans.

For his part, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, accepted this proposal and, in turn, appointed a Venezuelan delegation to travel to the Dominican Republic, led by Jorge Rodríguez.
