The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, highlighted this Thursday the importance of modernizing monitoring and early warning systems for climate events, with the support of Chinese technology and the active participation of communities. During the launch of the “Gran Mision Madre Tierra Venezuela” (Great Mission Mother Earth Venezuela) in Mérida state, the president emphasized the need to implement advanced tools to measure meteorological variables and strengthen prevention capabilities:
“With the technological advances we are developing and acquiring, especially through our strategic alliance with China, we must have more accurate measurement systems for opportune alerts,” stated Maduro. He also highlighted the key role of People’s Power in emergency management, recalling the effective response during the floods in Cumanacoa in 2023, where there was deployed a successful recovery plan.
The Vice President of the sector and Minister of People’s Power for Planning, Ricardo Menéndez, emphasized the need to monitor watersheds with meteorological and rainfall data to predict impacts: «If we measure the rainfalls at the headwaters of the watersheds, we can model with more precision the risks and optimize alerts,» he explained.
Maduro reaffirmed his commitment to training the population and improving prevention mechanisms in the face of the climate crisis: «Let’s strengthen early detection and structural alerts so that the people are prepared for these challenges.»
