Representatives of the Venezuelan people delivered a document this Thursday to the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Caracas, requesting an official position from the organization regarding the case of Venezuelan children detained in the United States.
The document includes statements from mothers of the affected minors, as well as from relatives of more than 250 Venezuelan migrants deported to El Salvador:
«With this document, we demand an urgent response from the UN, as this is a serious violation of human rights. The truth about the actions of the US government has been exposed,» declared Nahum Fernández, Mayor of the Capital District (Caracas).
Fernández insisted that the UN must «act with justice, issue a statement, and investigate the kidnapping of these children to ensure their return to Venezuela.»
For her part, activist Camila Fabri noted that 31 minors remain in the United States, far from their families and in unsafe conditions. Some have been in up to five foster homes, and their whereabouts are currently unknown.
«We call on the UN to intervene to rescue these innocent children and the Venezuelans trapped in detention centers in El Salvador. We will not rest until their repatriation is achieved,» she stated.
Rander Peña, executive secretary of ALBA-TCP, denounced that the objective of these detentions is to give the children up for adoption or use them as merchandise, taking advantage of their families’ suffering:
“It’s a rerun of ‘Operation Peter Pan,’ an old profit-making scheme. They separate young children so that, as they grow up, they forget their roots. It’s human trafficking and a grave violation,” he said.
Call for mobilization on social media:
Fernández urged Venezuelans to denounce these events through social media: “If the UN remains silent, our people will not. Together with President Maduro, we will take this fight to the bitter end to exert international pressure.”
He also criticized the US hypocrisy: “They accuse Venezuela of violating human rights, but they are responsible for cruel and inhumane acts against our fellow citizens.”
