Venezuela disavows ICJ jurisdiction over Essequibo

The Venezuelan government expressed this Friday that it does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to resolve the territorial dispute over the Essequibo Territory and rejects its intervention in the Venezuelan electoral process.

In a statement released on social media, Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez stated that «Venezuela (…) does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice and will not abide by any decision issued by this body regarding Guyana’s unilateral action.»

She reiterates that the international body «also seeks to evade compliance with the 1966 Geneva Agreement.»

The Bolivarian Government rejects the ruling issued on May 1, 2025, by the ICJ, «regarding the abusive and interventionist provisional measures requested by Guyana against the Venezuelan electoral process for the selection of authorities in the state of Guayana Esequiba.»

Furthermore, it notes that «the process has been rigged from the beginning and manipulated by anti-Venezuelan corporate interests that have nothing to do with justice.»

The document once again states that «nothing in international law allows the International Court of Justice to interfere in matters that are exclusively the domestic law of Venezuela, nor to seek to prohibit a sovereign act organized within the framework of its participatory political system and based on its Constitution and national legislation.»

Guayana Esequiba is Venezuelan territory:

«Guyana Esequiba is an inalienable part of Venezuelan territory and a legacy of our liberators. Its defense is a historic, constitutional, and moral mandate that unites the entire Bolivarian Nation: «There will be no international pressure, judicial blackmail, or foreign court that will make us back down from this conviction,» states the document.

In this regard, Venezuela «once again demands the Government of Guyana to stop delaying direct negotiations and strictly comply with the Geneva Agreement, as the only valid path to a definitive, peaceful, and mutually satisfactory solution regarding the territory of Guayana Esequiba.»
