This Tuesday, the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, rejected the claims by the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, to support the Government of Guyana in its attempts to strip Venezuela of the Essequibo Territory:
“Marco Rubio, (an) enemy of our country, as Secretary of State, continues to demonstrate his unhealthy obsession with harming Venezuela. Now he tries to support the fantasies of the Government of Guyana, which seeks to strip us of the historical rights bequeathed to us by our liberators and which are an inalienable part of our sovereignty”, he emphasized.
Through a message on social networks, the diplomat assured that the US official seeks to intervene in the territorial dispute. At the same time, he asserted that the only valid path is through the Geneva Agreement:
«The only legitimate and valid way to resolve the territorial controversy over Essequibo is through compliance with the Geneva Agreement of 1966. Neither the ill-intentioned interference of our enemies nor the cunning politics will be able to distort this reality», as details part of the text.
Likewise, he urged the Guyanese Government to “understand its obligation» and not turn to third parties to resolve the historical conflict in the region:
«The Government of Guyana must understand that its obligation is not to third parties, but to history, international law and peace in the region, for which reason it must sit at the table and negotiate with the bases established by the Geneva Agreement» he pointed out.
