AN received list of eligibles for the position of General Public Defender

The National Assembly received this Tuesday in ordinary session, the final report and the list of those eligible for the position of General Public Defender, in accordance with the provisions of articles 11, 12 and 13 of the Organic Law of Public Defense.

Deputy Giusseppe Alessandrello, president of the 2022-2024 Judicial Nominations Committee, presented the report and stated that this selection work is part of the process of revolutionizing the justice system and is also due to the process of re-institutionalization of the Venezuelan State.

He explained that the Judicial Nominations Committee began the selection process on June 10, according to four stages. The first stage was the call in which 28 citizens applied, names that were published in national newspapers. The second stage was the process of public objections, which was carried out for three business days, without receiving comments from the citizen power regarding the requirements presented by the 28 candidates to apply for the position.

In the third stage, was carried out the comprehensive evaluation that has to do with the process of observation, inspection and checking of the documents consigned by the applicants. And finally, the interview phase, where essentially it was sought in the first instance to know if the candidate knows the problems of the Venezuelan justice system, as well as to assess the expertise, know the skills and values of the people interviewed.

In this sense, he stressed that this evaluation process is crossed transversally by a request for capital information that some agencies of the Venezuelan State can provide: SENIAT, SAIME, Attorney General’s Office, Comptroller General’s Office, SEBIN, DGCIM and CICPC:

This information, together with the results of the interviews and the analysis of the consigned documents, go through a scale prepared by the Nominations Committee. And after the ten days of evaluation, resulted 10 citizens out of 28 eligibles to hold the position of Defender or General Public Defender,” said Deputy Alessandrello.

For his part, the president of the National Assembly, deputy Jorge Rodríguez, thanked all the members of the 2022-2024 Judicial Nominations Committee, especially its board of directors made up of deputies Giusseppe Alessandrello (president) and José Gregorio Correa (vice president), for the work they have been developing to deepen the transformation and judicial revolution in Venezuela.

Likewise, he stated that: “in the Organic Law of Public Defense approved by the National Assembly, there is no established period for the selection of the Public Defender, but due to the importance of the development of this process, the AN is going to take a short but reasonable time for the purpose of making the appointment”.

In another item on the Agenda, the AN unanimously approved the National Archives Law.

Deputy Jorge Rodríguez congratulated the deputies for the performance and good functioning of this AN. Likewise, he highlighted that, with the approval of the National Archives Law, there are thirteen (13) laws sanctioned in this 2022. Therefore, with the 38 legal instruments approved in 2021, in total there are 51 laws sanctioned by this AN:

For the purposes of the approval of this Law, I began to investigate in the archives how many laws were approved between 2016 and 2020, where there were 157 deputies, four presidents of the AN: Henry Ramos Allup, Julio Borges, Omar Barboza and others. In those four legislative exercises, two (2) laws were approved, one of them was the Law that abolished the Great Mission Housing Venezuela, which President Nicolás Maduro energetically did not enact, of course, because it flatly eliminated property on the GMVV apartments. And the other was the so-called Transitional Statute that repealed the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”, explained deputy Jorge Rodríguez.
