Goodbye to the crown:

This Tuesday the transition to the Parliamentary Republic of Barbados was completed since 1625 when the English settled on the Caribbean island, and although in 1961 the country achieved internal autonomy and in 1966 independence within the British Commonwealth, it was not until the past November 20, 2021 when Sandra Mason was unanimously elected by both houses of Parliament as Non-Executive President.

The official acts in Barbados to overcome the legacies of colonialism and say goodbye to the crown, began on November 23 and closed this Tuesday with the central activity, which also takes place within the framework of the commemoration of its 55 years of independence.

Brotherhood Relationships:

During the ceremony, Sandra Mason, who served as the Governor General and highest representative of Queen Elizabeth II in Barbados, will be invested as the first President of the nascent Republic, by Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

At the official events, Chancellor Plasencia had the opportunity to share with the renowned international artist Rihanna, who was named “Hero of the People of Barbados” on Tuesday in recognition of her work in promoting the Barbadian people in the world:

“A pleasure to have the opportunity to greet @rihanna, a recognized musical icon from Barbados, Cultural Ambassador and recipient of the distinction of Honor of National Hero for her outstanding contribution to the promotion and recognition of her nation before the world.”
