This Thursday, the Chancellor of the Republic, Jorge Arreaza, announced through the Twitter social network that, following instructions by the President Nicolas Maduro, the National Executive, talking with the governor of the Amazonas State of Brazil, Wilson Lima, immediately made available the necessary oxygen to meet the health contingency in Manaus: “Latin American solidarity first and foremost”, underlined the tweet.
The Brazilian State of Amazonas decreed this Thursday a curfew due to the collapse of the health system, as a result of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The curfew will be in effect from Friday, from seven at night until six in the morning.
Jessem Orellana, from the Fiocruz-Amazonia Foundation, a scientific research institution; declared to AFP that in Manaus “we ran out of oxygen and some health units became a kind of asphyxiation chamber”.
The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, joined this declaration, indicating that at this time, the department is in the most critical state of the pandemic.
The Amazon region “produces significant amounts of oxygen, but today our people need oxygen and solidarity,” said Lima, as quoted by the press office.
“In here there is not a single empty bed, an oxygen tank, nothing, we only have faith left,” said Luiza Castro, a resident of the Amazon capital.
Brazil – which will start next Tuesday the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 – is to date the first country most affected by the pandemic in South America, registering 8,324,294 positive cases (66,835 new infections in the last 24 hours), 207,095 deaths (1,086 new deaths) and 7,277,195 recoveries.
