The permanent representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations (UN), Samuel Moncada, reported through his Twitter account @SMoncada_VEN that this Wednesday was discussed the threat of the use of military force by the government of the United States against Venezuela, in a closed meeting in which only the member countries of the Security Council participated.
It is important to note that the Venezuelan issue was discussed in the Security Council at the request of the Russian delegation to the UN, which brought to the table military threats against Venezuela and threats to regional peace and security. This is based on the statements of a letter sent by the Venezuelan mission on April 3, 2020.
“On April 3, we denounced Trump’s government to the UN Security Council for initiating an act of war against Venezuela using the pandemic as an additional weapon to increase the suffering of the civilian population. A crime against humanity!”, said Ambassador Samuel Moncada.
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela delivered this letter to the UN to denounce the pretenses by the US government against the intentions of navally blocking Venezuela, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, using as excuse the alleged reinforcement of combat capacity of narcotics in the region and thus be able to violate national sovereignty.
Making a reference to the US’s Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper, and his false accusations against President Nicolás Maduro, which aim to bring about a political change in Venezuela through the use of force, the Venezuelan diplomatic representative stated:
“Just like Hitler’s Third Reich, Trump’s Reich disowns the international law and uses its propaganda organs of war to impose degrading and racist prejudices against UN-recognized heads of state. Trump, enemy of humanity!”
Ambassador Moncada stressed that these actions of the United States government “constitute a threat to humanity”, while reminding that the Security Council has the power to confront threats against Venezuela, through article 34 of the UN Charter stating that: The Security Council may investigate any controversy, or any situation that may lead to international friction or give rise to a controversy, in order to determine if the prolongation of such controversy or situation may endanger the maintenance of international peace and security.
Since August 2019, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has been denouncing to the UN Security Council the claims of the US government to impose a naval blockade against Venezuela, it has also requested immediate action in the face of the imminent threat to the peace and security of the region.
