The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his efforts to achieve peace in the region, as announced the award committee on Friday.
The distinction was awarded to Ahmed in recognition of “his efforts to achieve international peace and cooperation, and in particular, for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea,” according to the verdict.
The Nobel signed a historic peace agreement with Eritrea, which ended a conflict that took 20 years, which was taken into account to confer the distinction, as refer digital media.
The Norwegian Committee also highlighted the “unconditional willingness to accept the arbitration decision of a 2002 international border commission” on the delimitation of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, says Sputnik.
The institution also took into account Abiy’s initiatives to normalize diplomatic relations between Eritrea and Djibouti, its mediation efforts in a territorial dispute between Kenya and Somalia, as well as its role in the work to reach an agreement for democratic transition in Sudan.
