The Minister for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, denounced on Tuesday before the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), during the Convention against Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Assets, on the threat of a foreign intervention on Venezuela.
During his speech, the Venezuelan official warned about the risks of foreign intervention, which in the case of the national cultural heritage, would trigger acts of vandalism and illicit trafficking of cultural property.
Villegas shared an image on his official Twitter account – @VillegasPoljak – in which he is shown along with the secretary of the Convention against Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property, Lazare Eloundu, with whom he talked about the repatriation of the Kueka Stone:
«I appreciated his deep knowledge and goodwill regarding the legitimate Venezuelan aspiration», the Venezuelan minister wrote referring to the support provided by the agency for the repatriation of this rock that is sacred for the Pemon indigenous community, and which was stolen from the Canaima National Park by the German artist Wolfgang von Schwarzenfeld in 1998.
