Maduro: Sacred Fire of the Great Colombia of 199 years ago calls us to Latin American unity

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, recalled the historic heroic deed of Simón Bolívar for the Latin American freedom and what was the birth of the Gran Colombia, which on December 17, 1819, was decreed by the Angostura Congress:

“With the cry: ‘The Republic of Colombia is constituted, long live the Republic of Colombia’ the dream of two giants of history, Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Miranda, became a reality. 199 years later, the sacred fire that calls us to Latin American unity continues to burn” wrote the Head of State in his Twitter account, a message he accompanied with an image of the Liberator.

This new Republic was divided into three departments, whose capitals were Caracas, Quito and Bogotá. The Law was ratified in 1821 by the Congress of Cúcuta.

The Great Colombia was considered by the Liberator as the best guarantee of independent triumph. In the Jamaica Charter he predicted the unification of the two countries, the name of Colombia that he would adopt, and the form of government.
