Moreno: We will present the ANC a proposal for the reform of criminal laws in Venezuela

The president of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), Maikel Moreno, referred this Sunday to the reforms that are necessary to adapt the justice system to the reality of the country.

“Among the things that the Supreme Court of Justice is doing, which we will soon present to the National Constituent Assembly, is the reform of the criminal laws of Venezuela, adapting it to the new reality of the country”, he said.

During an interview in the “José Vicente Hoy” (José Vicente Today) program, he said that the magistrates are preparing modifications on criminal laws to be presented and evaluated afterwards.

He added that within the proposal it is proposed to criminalize and punish crimes such as terrorism and treason, which are detrimental to the Venezuelan population.

“Definitely, terrorism and treason against the Homeland have to be framed as a crime, and now the magistrates are working on a series of modifications to the laws, so that they can be sanctioned”, he said.

Procedural benefits:

Maikel Moreno also referred to the 80 people tried for being linked to acts of political violence who have received procedural benefits, granted as part of the process of reconciliation and national peace. He explained that the measures were granted after a thorough study between the Judicial Power and the Citizen Power.

“The Public Powers are given to immediately fulfill the integral need of the people of Venezuela, and, in the case of the National Constituent Assembly, through the Commission for Truth, has exhorted, at the request of the President of the Republic, the release (or application of other procedural benefits) of a number of citizens arrested for violence, who committed common crimes”, said Moreno.

He indicated that in the line of the fight against impunity, they are careful and vigilant so that those who have committed crimes against human rights, such as homicide, must respond before the law: “There can be no peace without justice. Definitely for peace to come has to be justice and definitely create an atmosphere of dialogue on that circumstance”, he said.

“Definitely with the liberated people, who have been given procedural benefits, we are creating an environment to continue or to make a real dialogue in this country”, he said.

Moreno added that to evaluate the measures the TSJ has determined to assign 32 magistrates committed to stability and democracy.
