Maduro calls for an increase of 95% in electronic payment mechanisms

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, made a call to expand the technological capacity of the bank in order to achieve that 95% of the payments in the country are made electronically, facilitating transactions to protect the national currency.

“85% of payments are made electronically, these are good news, but Venezuela can reach levels of up to a 95% of electronic payments. This would be optimal for the country, since one of the modalities of the economic war is to steal the physical money and convert the paper money into merchandise by taking it to Cúcuta, on the Colombian border, which has affected the life of the common Venezuelan”, he said during a meeting with representatives of the Banking Association of Venezuela, at the Sol del Perú Hall of Miraflores Palace.

The Head of State urged public and private banks to increase the number of points of sale in the various shops in the country to facilitate payments by the public. He reported that currently there are 354,000 points of sale working, stating that 150.000 new electronic points need to be incorporated.

Maduro condemned the irregularities in some businesses where the products that are sold in cash have a price, but if they are canceled through (electronic) points of sale they experience a premium that ranges between 20% and 30%.

“Public and private banking: go put the magnifying glass on this issue, is an issue that must be resolved to go by legal and regulatory means”, he said.
