The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, representing the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NAM), demanded the United States Government to cease violations of international law, after the administration of Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, with the transfer of its embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem.
«We call for the cessation of violations and provocations by the Government of the United States; we remember the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, including the acquisition of territories by force; the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly, and all other applicable provisions of international law including the Fourth Geneva Convention (…) »
This exhort is produced on Wednesday in the development of the Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in which Venezuela raised its voice of protest on behalf of the 120 countries that make up this forum of nations, the second largest in the world, to alert about the risk that is run to further increase tensions in the Middle East.
On December 5, the NAM Coordination Bureau, meeting in New York, issued a statement regarding the ongoing violations perpetrated by Israel against Palestine. In the document, recalled Maduro, the countries rejected «attempts to alter the character, status and demographic composition of the city of Israel.»
The sovereignty of Israel over the eastern part of the city of Jerusalem (East) is not recognized, so the actions taken by the United States government «lack legal validity and are null and illicit», said the Venezuelan Head of State in his speech, the movement adhered to the resolutions adopted by the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations concerning Jerusalem, confirming that it is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory.
«The Movement of Non-Aligned Countries warns that in the context of an extremely volatile situation and the diminishing prospects for the achievement of a just peace, any provocative, illegal and unilateral action in Jerusalem; the widespread threat of such actions in addition to jeopardizing the possibility of reaching a two-state solution, based on the previous borders of 1967, could seriously destabilize the fragile situation on the ground with dangerous consequences. «
