Maduro asks Rajoy and the European Union to listen to the voice of Catalonia

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, made a respectful call to his Spanish counterpart, Mariano Rajoy, to listen to the voice of Catalonia, an exhort he extended to the European Union, a block he pointed out one favoring the interests of the elites that direct it

“As a Venezuelan who loves Spain, I respect the Spanish people and respect the people of Catalonia, in a humble way, but also very heartfelt, I call for absolute respect,” he said, clarifying that as Head of State he is not taking sides by none of the sectors in conflict.

“The people have to be heard, you do not have to beat them like Rajoy did. That people deserves to be heard. I feel in the declarations of the people of Catalonia a social force more than a force of another type; I feel more a rejection of neoliberalism and looting that are making Spain than another situation that may be presented”, he insisted.

Maduro was impressed by the massive citizen mobilization registered on Saturday, in Barcelona downtown, to demand the release of the two independence leaders and eight former councilors of the Catalan government detained by the sovereignty plan.

“Our greetings, respect and admiration for the people of Catalonia,” said the President during the broadcast of the 96th edition of the program “Los Domingos con Maduro” (Sundays with Maduro), broadcast from Miraflores Palace in Caracas.
