The Minister for Information and Communication, Ernesto Villegas, on Monday urged the country’s media to carry out “investigative journalism, precision, data mining” to raise the truth about the victims of terrorist acts perpetrated by the right wing in the country.
“We have a wide freedom of expression in Venezuela. Communicators have to work with much responsibility on the issues associated with violence. Let’s not give the Venezuelan opposition, with their neo-Nazi factors, that treatment because we are doing a serious damage to the country”.
Villegas, when interviewed on the private channel Globovisión, recalled the case of Ukraine, where democratic opponents of Viktor Yanukovych’s government were treated by the Western press as freedom fighters, a sector that, after the overthrow of the President, shifted the “Ukrainian politics to the The Second World War and the persecution of the new Jews. Let’s not do that. ”
He recalled the treatment given by the press to the events of the April 2002 coup d’état, which justified in the deaths that h appened in Caracas downtown; “The people swore these were deaths made by Chávez, and CNN correspondent Otto Neustadtl came to the morgue and realized that the dead were on both sides. Villegas announced that on Monday afternoon, in the company of the Chancellor of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, will present a report with the results of a journalistic investigation raised by the Ministry for Communication and Information, with data from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Republic, declaration of relatives of victims and media briefings.
