The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said this Sunday that the nation faces an armed insurgency that has escalated in its destabilizing scopes, which has motivated the convening of the National Constituent Assembly.

“We are facing an armed insurgency that puts on the mask of peaceful marches that are simply the staging, and then they leave the violence installed”, he said during a telephone contact with Venezolana de Televisión.

He recalled the repeated initiatives of political dialogue that has tended to the Venezuelan opposition and which have been rejected, later summoning a civilian insurgency, which has caused the death of more than 30 Venezuelans. He pointed out that in this situation, he has activated mechanisms such as the Zamora Plan for the constitutional containment of the escalation of violence sponsored by these sectors.

He indicated that he went to the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), to the former Presidents of the commission and through intermediaries of the Vatican, to dialogue with the opposition, and they always refused. “I looked for all the channels of dialogue … they do not want a dialogue. They are the anti-dialogue culture”, he said.

He pointed out that: “In the face of the armed insurgency I had no other step to give. Please understand me. The only way to peace, to guide Venezuela, is (through) the National Constituent Assembly.

“We now have the Constituent Assembly. Our sword, our shield to the truth. And with the Constituent Assembly we are going to rebuild deep bases of love, of coexistence, of harmony, of reunion among the Venezuelans”, he emphasized.
